Ross’s practice is centered on human relationships with the land. He investigates how landscapes – both natural and artificial – shape community and culture. Within this framework of cultural geography, his ongoing projects examine the water crisis in the Western United States, and how indigenous communities on the frontlines of climate change are confronting a physical and spiritual loss of home.
His work has been widely published in National Geographic, TIME, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. The National Geographic Society named Ross a National Geographic Explorer in 2019 for his ongoing documentary work in indigenous Alaska.
Ross was named a 2023-24 Scripps Fellow at the Center for Environmental Journalism, the University of Colorado. He has a B.F.A. from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
